An average of 153 babies born daily in the region

A total of 55,999 live births was registered in Eastern Visayas in 2021, which is equivalent to a crude birth rate (CBR) of 12.25 or 12 births per thousand population. On the average, there were about 153 registered babies born daily or 6 babies born per hour.
 
The number of registered live births from 2013 to 2021 showed an erratic trend. The highest number of registered live births during the said period was observed in 2015 with 76,322 births while the lowest was depicted in 2021 with 55,999 births. (See Figure 1)
 

 

More males born than females

In the region, more than half (51.9%) or 29,073 of the registered live births were males, while females comprised 48.1 percent or 26,926 births. This resulted to a sex ratio at birth of 108 males per 100 females. (See Table 1 and Figure 2)
 

 

More males born than females

Among the provinces and highly urbanized city in Eastern Visayas, the province of Leyte recorded the highest number of live birth occurrences in 2021 with 21,754 births or 38.8 percent, followed by Samar with 9,431 births or 16.8%, and ranked third was Northern Samar with 7,095 births or 12.7%. (See Figure 3)
 
The province of Eastern Samar, the Highly Urbanized City of Tacloban and the provinces of Southern Leyte and Biliran had registered live births of 5,916 (10.6%), 4,825 (8.6%), 4,594 (8.2%) and 2,384 (4.3%), respectively.
 
 

Most births occur in the month of September

In 2021, most of the registered live births in the region occurred in the month of September with 5,526 births or 9.9 percent of the total births. It was followed by the months of October (9.8%), November (9.5%) and August (9.1%). The month of February had the least number of registered live births at 3,505 or 6.3%. (See Table 2)
 
Ninety-five out of one hundred birth deliveries are medically attended Ninety-five out of one hundred or 95 percent of birth deliveries in Eastern Visayas were attended by medical professionals such as physicians, nurses or midwives. (See Figure 4 and Table 3)
 
 
There were 2,625 registered live births which were attended by traditional birth attendants (hilot/unlicensed midwife), while 121 birth deliveries were served by other attendants at birth.
 
Among the provinces in Eastern Visayas, including the Highly Urbanized City of Tacloban, the province of Leyte had registered the highest proportion of birth deliveries attended by medical professionals with 21,300 births (40.0%), followed by Samar with 8,537 births (16.0%) and Northern Samar with 6,348 births (11.9%). The province of Biliran had the least proportion of registered live births attended by health professionals with 2,353 births or 4.4 percent. (See Table 3)
 

 

More than half of the registered babies born to unwed mothers

More than half (37,950 births or 67.6%) of the total registered live births in 2021, by usual place of residence of the mother, were born out of wedlock. (See Table 4)
 
Based on the 2021 Vital Statistics national data released by PSA, Eastern Visayas ranked second in the percentage of illegitimate babies in the country, next to the National Capital Region with 69.2 percent.

 

 

 

EXPLANATORY NOTES

Data on births presented in this release were obtained from the Certificates of Live Births (Municipal Form No. 102) that were registered at the Office of the City/Municipal Civil Registrars in Eastern Visayas and forwarded to the Philippine Statistics Authority. Information presented includes registered live births which occurred from January to December 2021.
