FOURTH QUARTER PALAY PRODUCTION DECREASES BY 0.14 PERCENT

Palay production of the province reached 19,110 metric tons (MT) in the fourth quarter of 2022. This figure is 0.14 percent lower compared to its production of 19,137 MT during the same quarter of 2021.

By ecosystem, irrigated palay accounted for all palay production for both reference periods. There was no reported production of rainfed palay.

FOURTH QUARTER AREA HARVESTED FOR PALAY INCREASES BY 0.09 PERCENT 

Area harvested for palay increased by 0.09 percent during the fourth quarter of 2022, from 4,438 hectares during the fourth quarter of 2021 to 4,442 hectares during the same quarter of 2022.

The area harvested for palay for both reference quarters were for irrigated palay resulting to an identical figure with the provincial area harvested for palay.

FOURTH QUARTER YIELD PER HECTARE OF PALAY RECORDED AT 4.30 MT PER HECTARE

Given the volume of production and area harvested for palay, the resulting yield was recorded at 4.30 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2022. This figure is lower by 0.23 percent than the reported yield of 4.31 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2021.

By ecosystem, irrigated palay reported the same figure with the total provincial yield for palay while the rainfed palay registered no yield during the fourth quarter of 2021 and 2022.

FOURTH QUARTER CORN PRODUCTION INCREASES BY 3.70 PERCENT 

The province recorded a total corn production of 212.59 MT during the fourth quarter of 2022. This figure is higher by 3.70 percent than its production of 205 MT during the same quarter of 2021.

By ecosystem, white corn accounted for majority (75.58 %) of the provincial corn production during the fourth quarter of 2022 while yellow corn comprised the remaining 24.42 percent. White corn production increased by 5.70 percent, while yellow corn production decreased by 2.04 percent.

FOURTH QUARTER AREA HARVESTED FOR CORN DECREASES BY 1.10 PERCENT

Area harvested for corn observed a 1.10 percent decrease from 182 hectares during the fourth quarter of 2021 to 180 hectares during the fourth quarter of 2022. 

By ecosystem, area harvested for white corn comprised about 75.56 percent of the total area harvested for corn during the fourth quarter of 2022 while about 24.44 percent were for yellow corn. Area harvested for white corn and yellow corn decreased by 0.73 percent and 2.22 percent, respectively.

FOURTH QUARTER YIELD PER HECTARE OF CORN RECORDED AT 1.18 MT PER HECTARE

The province recorded a yield of 1.18 MT per hectare as a result of the volume of production and area harvested of corn during the fourth quarter of 2022. This figure is higher by 4.42 percent compared to its yield of 1.13 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2021.

By ecosystem, white corn recorded a yield of 1.18 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2022 which is 6.31 percent higher compared to its yield of 1.11 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2021.

Yellow corn, on the other hand, recorded a yield of 1.18 MT during the fourth quarter of 2021 and 2022.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) consists of two (2) national surveys which are conducted simultaneously - the Palay Production Survey (PPS) and the Corn Production Survey (CPS). These are some of the major agricultural surveys conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA). 

The surveys generate estimates and forecasts on palay and corn production, area and yield as well as other production-related data that serves as input for policy making and programs on palay/rice and corn.

The PCPS is a quarterly survey which covers sample farming households in sample barangays in all provinces except Batanes but including Zamboanga and Davao City. Data item gathered on this survey include production, area planted/harvested and yield by ecosystem and seed type; usage of seeds, fertilizer and pesticides; source of irrigation water and adequacy, monthly distribution of production and area harvested; farm household disposition of production; area with standing crop, farmer’s planting intention for the quarter; and awareness and availing of palay and corn program interventions. 

Definition of Terms: 

Production – refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. 

Area Harvested – actual area from which harvests are realized. 

Yield per Hectare – an indicator of productivity derived by dividing total production by the area harvested.
