08 November 2024 –Tacloban City. Charles Jarret P. Bernil of Biliran Province State University – College of Engineering was hailed Regional Champion in the 28th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ). Eighteen-year old Charles graduated senior high school with academic track on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STRAND) diploma from Tucdao National High School in Kawayan, Biliran Province. He bested 20 other freshmen from all over the region after garnering a total score of 26 in the 2-hour competitive quiz.

The second place winner of the 28th PSQ was Heart Eveange Lhynne Mae E. Progella, a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering freshman of Northwest Samar State University. Ms. Progella, 18 years old, graduated senior high school with STRAND diploma from Calbayog City National High School in Calbayog City, Samar. Meanwhile, the third place winner was 18-year old April Anne K. Dublas of Visayas State University - Main Campus, a graduate of the six-year secondary curriculum of Philippine Science High School (PSHS) - Eastern Visayas Campus.

The winners brought home plaques of recognition and tokens worth PhP 10,000 (champion), PhP 8,000 (2nd prize), and PhP 6,000 (3rd prize). Their respective coaches were also awarded with certificates and tokens. The rest of the contestants and their coaches were given PSA tokens and certificates of participation.

Mr. Bernil will represent Eastern Visayas in the 28th PSQ National Finals to be held in Metro Manila on 05 December 2024. Eastern Visayas bagged its first PSQ national championship trophy during the 13th PSQ in 2004 by Jane Lois E. de Veyra, a BS Computer Science student of the University of the Philippines-Visayas.

The 28th PSQ Regional Championship was administered simultaneously with other regions on 08 November 2024. It is a nationwide annual search for the country’s young statistics whizzes. It is designed to test the knowledge acquired from the secondary education curriculum by freshmen students enrolled in colleges and universities in the 17 regions of the Philippines. It was launched in 1992 by then National Statistics Office (NSO) together with the Philippine Statistical Association, Inc. (PSAI).
