FOURTH QUARTER PALAY PRODUCTION INCREASES BY 2.00 PERCENT

Palay production of the Province reached 17,746.00 metric tons (MT) during the fourth quarter of 2020 which is 2.00 percentage points higher compared to its production of 18,109.00 MT during the same quarter of 2019.

By ecosystem, irrigated palay accounted for all palay production for both reference periods. There was no reported production of rainfed palay.

FOURTH QUARTER PALAY AREA HARVESTED DECREASED BY 1.47 PERCENT

Area harvested for palay decreased by of 1.47 percent during the fourth quarter of 2020 recording a total of 4,083.00 hectares from 4,144.00 hectares during the same quarter of 2019.

All area harvested for palay for both reference quarters were for irrigated palay resulting to an identical figure with the provincial area harvested for palay.

FOURTH QUARTER PALAY YIELD PER HECTARE RECORDED AT 4.35 MT PER HECTARE

Given the volume of production and area harvested for palay, the resulting yield was at 4.35 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2020. This figure is slightly lower by 0.46 percent than the reported yield of 4.37 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2019.

By ecosystem, irrigated palay yielded the same figure with the total provincial yield for palay while the rainfed palay registered no yield at all during the fourth quarter of 2019 and 2020.

FOURTH QUARTER CORN PRODUCTION DROPPED BY 2.48 PERCENT

Given the volume of production and area harvested for palay, the resulting yield was at 4.35 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2020. This figure is slightly lower by 0.46 percent than the reported yield of 4.37 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2019.

By ecosystem, irrigated palay yielded the same figure with the total provincial yield for palay while the rainfed palay registered no yield at all during the fourth quarter of 2019 and 2020.

FOURTH QUARTER CORN AREA HARVESTED DECREASED BY 3.78 PERCENT

A decline of 3.78 percent was noted in the area harvested for corn from 185.00 hectares during the fourth quarter of 2019 to 178.00 hectares during the fourth quarter of 2020.

By ecosystem, area harvested for white corn comprised 74.72 percent of the total area harvested for corn during the fourth quarter of 2020. Its area diminished by 6.99 percent from 143.00 hectares to 133.00 hectares. Meanwhile, area harvested for yellow corn accounted for 25.28 percent. Its area increased by 7.14 percent from 42.00 MT to 45.00 MT.

FOURTH QUARTER CORN YIELD PER HECTARE RECORDED AT 1.15 MT PER HECTARE

The province recorded a yield of 1.15 MT per hectare as a result of the volume of production and area harvested of corn during the fourth quarter of 2020. This figure is higher by 1.77 percent compared to its production of 1.13 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2019.

By ecosystem, yellow corn reported more yield than white corn. Its yield, however, declined by 2.42 percent from 1.24 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2019 to 1.21 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2020

Yield of white corn increased by 2.73 percent from 1.10 MT per hectare during the fourth quarter of 2019 to 1.13 MT per hectare during the same quarter of 2020.

TECHNICAL NOTES

The Palay and Corn Production Survey (PCPS) consists of two (2) national surveys which are conducted simultaneously - the Palay Production Survey (PPS) and the Corn Production Survey (CPS). These are some of the major agricultural surveys conducted by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).

The surveys generate estimates and forecasts on palay and corn production, area and yield as well as other production-related data that serves as input for policy making and programs on palay/rice and corn.

The PCPS is a quarterly survey which covers sample farming households in sample barangays in all provinces except Batanes and include Zamboanga and Davao City. Data item gathered on this survey include production, area planted/harvested and yield by ecosystem and seed type; usage of seeds, fertilizer and pesticides; source of irrigation water and adequacy, monthly distribution of production and area harvested; farm household disposition of production; area with standing crop, farmer’s planting intention for the quarter; and awareness and availment of palay and corn program interventions.

Definition of Terms:

Production – refers to the quantity produced and actually harvested for a particular crop during the reference period. Area
Harvested – actual area from which harvests are realized. Yield per
Hectare – an indicator of productivity derived by dividing total production by the area harvested.
