Total population of Mahaplag as of 2015 is 27,823

The municipality of Mahaplag has a total population of 27,823 as of August 1, 2015 based from the results of the 2015 Census of Population. It was higher by 1,224 persons as compared to 26,599 total count in 2010 and higher by 1,312 persons from its total count of 26,511 in 2000.

Its population in 2015 comprised 1.6 percent of the total population of Leyte (excluding Tacloban City). It grew at the rate of 0.86 percent annually from 2010 to 2015, which is higher by 0.83 percentage point from its population growth rate in 2000 to 2010 of 0.03 percent. It is the fifth smallest growing municipality in Leyte in 2015.

The household population of Mahaplag totaled to 27,823 persons in 2015, which is 4.6 percent higher than its count in 2010 at 26,594 persons. The entire population of Mahaplag in 2015 comprised of household population.

The number of households in 2015 reached 6,238, higher by 400 households from 5,838 in 2010. The average household size in Mahaplag declined from 4.6 in 2010 to 4.5 in 2015.

The estimated total land area of Mahaplag was 104.79 square kilometers as per data from the Land Management Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The resulting population density in 2015 posted at 266 persons per square kilometer, higher than in 2000 and 2010 at 253 and 254 persons per square kilometer, respectively.

Of the 28 barangays of Mahaplag, Barangay Poblacion registered the biggest population with 3,909 persons in 2015 or 14.0 percent of the municipality’s total population. The remaining barangays which completed the top 10 barangays in terms of population were Polahongon (2,928), Malinao (1,787), Campin (1,729), Union (1,599), Hilusig (1,489), San Isidro (1,463), Upper Mahaplag (1,371), Himamara (1,248) and Pinamonoan (1,121).

Meanwhile, Barangay Magsuganao recorded the smallest population in 2015 with 157 persons which accounted 0.6 percent of the total population of Mahaplag. The remaining barangays which completed the bottom 10 barangays in terms of population were Malipoon (185), Santo Niño (211), Maligaya (213), Santa Cruz (326), Liberacion (340), Tagaytay (384), Hinaguimitan (386), Paril (422) and San Juan (445).

The top three (3) fastest growing barangays of Mahaplag in terms of population growth rate from 2010 to 2015 were Santo Niño (11.69 percent), Magsuganao (6.28 percent) and Pinamonoan (3.37 percent). The rest of the barangays which completed the top 10 fastest growing barangays were Maligaya, Palañogan, Mabuhay, Santa Cruz, Mahayahay, Hiluctogan and Mahayag with PGRs ranging from 1.72 percent to 3.36 percent.
