Palay Production in Leyte increased by 3.4 percent in Third Quarter of 2016
Leyte is considered as the major producer of palay in Eastern Visayas. It accounted for about 29.2 percent of the region’s production in the third quarter of 2016.
The volume of palay production in Leyte increased by 3.4 percent, from 34,124 metric tons during the third quarter of 2015 to 35,269 metric tons during the reference period.
Majority of produced palay in Leyte are grown in irrigated farms. During the third quarter of 2016, about 85.6 percent of the total palay productions in Leyte are harvested from irrigated farms.
Production from irrigated farms increased by 1.7 percent, from 29,196 metric tons in third quarter of 2015 to 29,678 metric tons in same period of 2016. Likewise, the volume of production of palay from rainfed farms significantly increased by 13.5 percent posting at 5,591 metric tons in third quarter of 2016 from 4,928 metric tons in the same period of 2015.
In the third quarter of 2016, area harvested for palay was estimated at 9,154 hectares with 1.7 percent growth from 9,002 hectares in the third quarter of 2015. Irrigated farms usually posted majority of the area harvested. During the quarter in review, it recorded an area harvested of 7,456 hectares or 81.4 percent of the total area harvested for palay in Leyte in the third quarter of 2016. However, a minimal increase (0.2 percent) is observed from 7,438 hectares of area harvested during the same period of 2015. While area harvested from rainfed farms contributes lesser share than irrigated farms, the area harvested increased by 8.6 percent, from 1,564 hectares in third quarter of 2015 to 1,699 hectares during the reference quarter.
