Month - Long Activities for the 30th NSM Set

The Philippine Statistics Authority – Regional Statistical Service Office VIII (PSA – RSSO VIII) in coordination with the Regional Statistics Committee VIII
(RSC - VIII) have lined up series of activities for the 30th National Statistics Month (NSM) Celebration this October. This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme, “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation.”

The 30th NSM will kick - off with the Consumer and StatMan Fun Run 2019 on 29 September 2019. This event is conducted in partnership with the Department of Trade and Industry – Regional Office VIII (DTI – 8) in celebration of the 2019 Consumer Month.

The 30th NSM Opening Ceremony will be conducted on 30 September 2019, 10:00 AM at Robinsons North Activity Area, Abucay, Tacloban City hosted by PSA – RSSO 8. Highlights of the program will be the launching of the Eastern Visayas Data Shoppe and the giving of Certificates of Recognition to PSA Stakeholders. The opening of the 30th NSM Data Garden, an interagency statistical exhibit featuring different statistics generating information systems of various government agencies/institutions, will immediately follow.  The 30th NSM Data Garden will be on display at the Robinsons North Activity Area, Abucay, Tacloban City the whole day of 30 September 2019.

The 1st Scrap Stats: 30th NSM Poster Making Contest will be conducted on 30 September 2019, 2:00 PM at the Robinsons North Activity Area, Abucay, Tacloban City. This contest, which will use scrap/recyclable materials, will be participated in by ten (10) government/private institutions in the region. It aims to promote awareness and appreciation of the NSM celebration and encourage the public to recycle and be more actively involved in protecting the environment.

Highlight of this year’s NSM celebration is the 1st Eastern Visayas Data Festival (1st EV Data Fest) on 29 October 2019 at The Oriental Hotel and Resort, Palo, Leyte. This is a replica of the 1st Philippine Data Festival (PH Data Fest) held on 14 – 15 November 2018 at the Peninsula Manila. The activity aims to provide a venue for various sectors in the region to discuss current innovations/updates in the local statistical system, and will also include games and contests for the youth. The 1st EV Data Fest will banner the theme of the 1st PH Data Fest, "Bringing Statistics Closer to the People.” The event will be participated in by around 200 faculty and students of state universities offering statistics-related degree programs, data users and producers in the region from the regional line agencies, local government units, and the private sector.

To encourage wider participation to the NSM celebration and to promote the conduct of activities that will further bring off the objectives and spirit of the month-long observance of the NSM, the Search for the 30th NSM Bida – Best Agency will also be conducted. This is the level-up version of the 2018 Best NSM Agency to recognize the agency with outstanding participation and efforts during the 30th NSM Celebration.

Other NSM activities lined up for the month-long celebration include interagency tree planting, symposia, data dissemination, statistical seminars, statistics quiz, stat trivia, information and education campaign activities such as media interviews, and hanging of NSM streamers.

The NSM is celebrated annually for the purpose of promoting, enhancing and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensuring the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country. It was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month.
