Month long activities for the 29th NSM set

The Philippine Statistics Authority – Regional Statistical Service Office VIII (PSA – RSSO VIII) in coordination with the Regional Statistics Committee VIII (RSC - VIII) have lined up series of activities for the 29th National Statistics Month (29th NSM) Celebration this October. This year’s celebration is anchored on the theme, “Exploring Philippine Wonders in Numbers: Statistics Towards Sustainable Tourism Development”.

The 29th NSM Opening Ceremony will be conducted on 2 October 2018, 10:00 AM at the Robinsons North Activity Area, Abucay, Tacloban City hosted by the Department of Tourism. It will feature presentations on tourism statistics and the results of the 2016 Household Survey on Domestic Visitors (HSDV). The opening of the Interagency Statistical Exhibit and Tourism Fair, which will be participated in by various government agencies/institutions and tourism establishments, will immediately follow.  The Statistical Exhibit and Tourism Fair will be on display at the Robinsons North Activity Area, Abucay, Tacloban City from 2 – 6 October 2018.

The 29th NSM kicked - off with the first ever StatMan Fun Run yesterday, 30 September 2018. It was participated in by various government agencies, private institutions and the academe.

PSA – RSSO VIII has organized a Seminar on Official Statistics on 17 October 2018, 8:30 AM – 12:00 NN at Eastern Visayas State University Graduate School Function Hall, Tacloban City. This activity is in response to the clamor of media practitioners to orient them with the different statistical indicators in order to appreciate, understand and properly disseminate the numbers to the public. It will feature presentations on official statistics and understanding infographics. In the afternoon, Philippine Statistics Association Inc., (PSAI) Region VIII Chapter Annual General Assembly will be conducted. This will be participated in by PSAI Region VIII Chapter members and selected statisticians in the region.

Other NSM activities lined up for the month-long celebration include interagency tourism caravan, tree planting, symposia, data dissemination, statistical seminars,  statistics quiz, slogan and poster making contests, stat trivia, information and education campaign activities such as media interviews, and hanging of NSM streamers.

The NSM is celebrated annually for the purpose of promoting, enhancing and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensuring the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country. It was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month.
