The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) together with the Regional Statistics Committee (RSC) is set to kick-off a series of month-long activities for the 28th National Statistics Month Celebration this October. The celebration is anchored on the theme, “Facts and Figures for the Future: Statistics for Evidence-Based Decisions Towards AmBisyon Natin 2040”.
The Opening of the National Statistics Month will coincide with the 2017 International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals Statistics. The conference, the biggest gathering of statisticians, researchers, data providers and users, and stakeholders of statistics on SDGs from various countries will be held on October 4-6, 2017 at The Peninsula Manila, Makati City.
Mr. Johannes Jütting of the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21), Ms. Francesca Perucci of the UNSD and National Statistician Lisa Grace S. Bersales of the PSA, as well as Secretary Ernesto M. Pernia of the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) will grace the event.
At the regional level, the NSM celebration will commence with a Motorcade on October 2, 2017 at around 9:00 in the morning, from Plaza Libertad to Robinsons Place Tacloban in Marasbaras. The Opening Ceremony will immediately follow at the Robinsons Place New Activity Area. This will start with the Opening of Statistical Exhibit followed by the Opening Program hosted by NEDA.
The Statistical Exhibits, which will be participated in by various government agencies and institutions featuring sectoral statistics focused on AmBisyon Natin 2040, will be on display at Robinsons Place from October 2-4, 2017. The Opening Program, on the other hand, will feature presentations on AmBisyon Natin 2040 and the 2015 Demographic Characteristics of Eastern Visayas.
PSA together with NEDA, this year’s host for the NSM Opening Ceremony, will conduct a Press Conference to disseminate the various activities lined-up for this month long celebration on
October 3, 2017, 9:30 in the morning at the Philippine Information Agency – Regional Office 8.
Other NSM activities lined up for the month include symposia, data dissemination, seminars, trainings, workshops, statistics quiz, slogan and poster making contests, stat trivia, tree planting, information and education campaign activities such media interviews, and hanging of NSM streamers and tarpaulins.
The NSM is celebrated annually for the purpose of promoting, enhancing and instilling nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics and at the same time ensuring the support of the public in improving and enhancing the quality and standards of statistics in the country. It was first observed in 1990 pursuant to Presidential
Proclamation No. 647, Declaring the Month of October of Every Year as the National Statistics Month.
