Fishery Production in Eastern Visayas posts 2.91 Percent increase in the Third Quarter of 2019

Eastern Visayas fishery production went up to 31,764 metric tons (MT) during the third quarter in 2019 from 30,865 MT in the same quarter in 2018, posting an increase of 2.91 percent.

In the third quarter of 2019, Eastern Visayas ranked eighth among the regions with low fishery production in the country with 3.21 percent contribution to the country’s total fishery production.

Among provinces, Leyte recorded the highest volume of fishery production at 11,540 MT, comprising 36.33 percent of the total fishery production in the region. Samar ranked second at 8,755 MT, accounting for 27.56 percent of the region’s total fish production. Southern Leyte, meanwhile, had the lowest volume of production at 1,264 MT, which only comprised 3.98 percent of the total fishery production.
 
Volume of production in commercial fishing went down by 16.63 percent, from 3,024 MT in the third quarter of 2018 to 2,521 MT in the same quarter of 2019. Among provinces, Samar registered the highest volume of production at 1,028 MT, comprising40.77 percent of the total commercial fishery production in Eastern Visayas. Southern Leyte, meanwhile, registered the lowest volume of production in the third quarter of 2019 at 39 MT, accounting for 1.54 percent of the total commercial fishery production in the region.
 
Samar island dominated (Samar, Eastern Samar and Northern Samar) the municipal fishery (both marine and inland fishing) production in Eastern Visayas with 71.44 percent combined share to the total municipal fishery (both marine and inland fishing) production in Eastern Visayas during the third quarter of 2019. Southern Leyte, meanwhile, registered the lowest contribution with 6.28 percent share or 1,178 MT during the third quarter of 2019.
 
The region’s total volume of production in municipal fishing (both marine and inland fishing) registered an increase of 4.70 percent, from 17,919 MT in the third quarter of 2018 to 18,761 MT in the same quarter of 2019. All provinces registered increases in municipal fishing, except Northern Samar and Eastern Samar, which recorded a decline by 15.99 percent and 12.85 percent, respectively. Leyte recorded the highest increase by 108.90 percent, from 1,373 MT in the third quarter of 2018 to 2,868 MT during the third quarter of 2019.
 
Volume of production in aquaculture recorded an increase of 5.64 percent, from 9,923 MT in the third quarter of 2018 to 10,482 MT in the same period of 2019. All provinces registered increases in aquaculture, except Eastern Samar and Samar which recorded a decline in production by 50.6 percent and 18.69 percent, respectively.
 
Among provinces, Leyte topped the production of aquaculture at 8,516 MT, comprising 81.24 percent of the total aquaculture production in the region. Samar ranked second at 1,584 MT, accounting to 15.11 percent share of the region’s total aquaculture production. Eastern Samar, meanwhile, registered the lowest contribution with 0.03 percent share or 3 MT during the third quarter of 2019.
 
Municipal fishing (18,761 MT) contributed more than half or 59.06 percent of the total fishery production in the region. Aquaculture contributed 33.00 percent (10,482 MT), while commercial fishing accounted for 7.94 percent (2,521 MT).
